It all began with my Dad working in advertising during the 50’s, travelling the world and working with some of the top producers – the era had always inspired me and my creative nature meant that I had always wanted to do something to do with design.
I am able to design and create, however, unfortunately I didn’t get the drawing gene like my Dad and Brother but being qualified in interior design means that I have renovated a large amount of properties. We somehow came across The Square Bubble which is now where Number 18 is based. There was something about the building and I knew the unloved rooms could be transformed in to welcoming, spacious studios. A few years on, I have two lovely studios as well as being neighbour to ND make-up artists (highly recommended)
Back in 1999, I opened my first ever gift shop but always had a passion for weddings dabbling in and out of wedding favour making. By chance, I began to sell vintage wedding dresses sourced from different parts of the world, that was when Vintage at Number 18 was born. It soon came to my realisation that although the vintage wedding dresses were absolutely gorgeous, they were also ridiculously tiny. I have since teamed up with a seamstress and we now design and make our very own bespoke vintage wedding dresses which is where Number 18 comes in. Of course, we still offer vintage wedding dresses but there is something special about designing and creating wedding dresses with the brides and watching their faces gleam as they choose their materials and design of the dress and of course, when I see the amazing wedding photographs with a dress that has been designed and made by Number 18!
Number 18 offer bespoke vintage inspired wedding and bridesmaids dresses, based in the city Newcastle Upon Tyne, we are located on the first floor of The Square Bubble. The studio is just down the road from the Discovery Museum and Fired Earth and situated above Olde Worlde Fireplaces. Our two studios allow us to design and make some dresses in one and see brides in the other where we have a display of vintage, bespoke and bridesmaids dresses.
We encourage brides to try on as many dresses as they like so that they can get an idea of shapes, necklines and sleeves and also to see what suits them and what they feel comfortable in.
We’re very laid back and relaxed and allow brides to bring in whoever they would like, we tend to say that the appointment will last about an hour as any longer and the dresses will seem to merge in to one! If you feel you would like longer, please let us know at appointment stage.
By offering appointment only, it means brides and their family and friends can have privacy while in the studio and have our full attention.
We feel some girls like privacy to try the dresses on and if confident will come out and show her guests, therefore, we don’t dress the bride unless they would like us to.
While in the studio, there is by no means and pressure or pushing in to buying a dress, if brides would like to go and think about it, we give them as long as they like before making a further appointment to start the process if they wish to. It is always better to try on as many dresses and styles as possible until they feel like they’ve found “the one” whether that is with Number 18 or another boutique.
We would encourage questions either at the enquiry stage or at anytime throughout the process.
Last but not least, we hope you enjoy the time with us!
